Atlassian Partners with Community Solar Farm for Green HQ Power
A solar farm, which is collectively owned by local community investors, has clinched a decade-long agreement with one of Australia’s prominent technology firms to supply energy for its headquarters.
Atlassian revealed its virtual power purchase agreement with the Goulburn Community Energy Co-operative on Friday. This arrangement will finance nearly 70 per cent of the energy produced by the solar farm over the next ten years.
Renewable Energy for New Headquarters
The electricity generated from this initiative in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales will cater to the renewable energy demands of Atlassian’s impressive 39-storey headquarters in Sydney, which is slated to open in 2028.
Situated on 2.2 hectares of industrial land in Goulburn, the solar and battery farm is equipped with 2,300 solar panels alongside a battery storage capacity of four megawatt-hours. This project is the result of investments from around 288 local contributors, each of whom invested a minimum of $400, and it officially connected to the electricity grid in March 2026, 12 years after its initial proposal.
Support for Local Workers and Community
This agreement comes on the heels of a $2.3 million grant from the NSW government, and according to Andrew Bray, chair of the Goulburn Community Energy Co-operative, it will benefit local workers and suppliers significantly.
Bray highlighted the hard work and dedication of the volunteers and investor community who persevered for years to see this project realised. “Having a prestigious Australian company like Atlassian join us as a commercial partner is a significant endorsement of what we have achieved,” he commented.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
While the financial details of the agreement have not been made public, Jessica Hyman, Atlassian’s chief sustainability officer, noted that it will aid in fulfilling the company’s promise to power its Sydney headquarters entirely with renewable energy.
“Achieving net zero requires collaboration throughout the entire energy landscape,” Hyman remarked. “This investment not only adds clean energy to the shared grid for everyone to benefit from, but it also guarantees that Atlassian’s Central HQ is supported by local renewable sources from its inception.”
Atlassian’s new building, anticipated to cost around $1.4 billion, may become the tallest hybrid timber tower in the world upon completion. It is designed to serve as a focal point for Sydney’s Tech Central precinct.
