NBN Co Tests Solar Sleeve for Wireless Tower Power
NBN Co is currently testing a novel flexible solar panel sleeve aimed at sustaining fixed wireless services during power failures, with the capability of meeting up to 40 per cent of a location’s daytime energy needs.
The month-long proof-of-concept trial is being carried out at an active fixed wireless site in New Gisborne, Victoria, where solar panels have been affixed to the north-facing side of a 40-metre-high monopole.
Innovative Technology from Decon Corporation
Created by Decon Corporation, the system employs lightweight, bendable solar laminate technology combined with existing battery storage to offer an alternative power solution during power outages.
This innovative setup is intended to ensure that equipped sites can function for as long as 12 hours during a blackout, thereby preserving connectivity for surrounding customers.
Engineering with Sustainability in Mind
Decon spearheaded the development of the solar sleeve, battery storage system, and mounting solution at their manufacturing base in Scoresby, Melbourne.
Their patented mounting technology allows the solar laminate to be easily applied to existing monopoles, with the lightweight design aiming to reduce any extra structural load.
NBN Co’s Commitment to Renewable Energy
Guy Scott, NBN Co’s chief technology officer, remarked that this trial showcases how renewable energy sources are capable of enhancing the resilience of the network.
“The initial trial highlighted the potential of this curved solar solution in minimising our overall carbon impact by utilising more solar energy and batteries,” he stated.
“As we transition into the operational phase, we believe this approach will bolster the stability of the NBN network, allowing selected fixed wireless sites to remain functional during mains power outages, thus keeping local communities connected when it matters most.”
Addressing Emergency Situations
This trial holds particular significance in emergency scenarios, where power failures can disrupt vital telecommunications systems.
NBN Co will carry on assessing the effectiveness of this system and will investigate possibilities for implementing similar energy solutions throughout its network.
