Queensland Achieves Record Solar Power Share Amid Winter Conditions

Queensland has reached a remarkable milestone in its electricity generation, achieving a new high for solar power integration, even during the winter months. This development offers an insightful glimpse into the evolving energy landscape of Australia’s Sunshine State.

Geoff Eldridge from Global Power Energy reported that large-scale solar accounted for an impressive 38.2 per cent of the state’s electricity usage at 9:10 am on July 26, a Sunday. This figure surpasses Queensland’s earlier benchmark of 37.1% established on April 25.

Noteworthy Solar Output During Winter

Eldridge highlighted the significance of this achievement via LinkedIn, noting that during winter, utility-scale solar production reached around 3,097 megawatts (MW), compared to a consumption level of about 8,112 MW. He added that solar output later peaked at 3.1 MW, marking Queensland’s 10th-highest daily maximum.

Record Battery Storage Achievements

In addition to the solar power record, July 26 also saw a peak in battery-stored energy, hitting 5,646 megawatt-hours by 3:30 pm. The maximum share from renewable energy sources, including battery storage, nearly touched 76 per cent of overall consumption, placing it as rank 16.

Eldridge emphasizes the importance of these records, stating, “A winter solar-share record, record battery stored energy and a high RES share on the same day provide a useful snapshot of Queensland’s changing daytime operating conditions.”

Visual representations of this data show some curtailment, indicating that even with substantial input from big batteries and pumped hydro systems absorbing parts of the day’s surplus, there were limits on consumption capacity.
