Waroona: Major Renewable Energy Project in Australia
Frontier Energy has swiftly arranged financing and selected an EPC contractor to advance Stage 1 of its Waroona renewable energy initiative located in Western Australia.
The company has secured up to $280 million in debt financing, backed by credit-approved commitments from Natixis and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, with as much as $250 million allocated specifically for construction purposes.
Funding and Project Readiness
Coupled with a recent conditional placement of $110 million, the Waroona project is now fully funded for both construction and commissioning phases. “Our team is prepared to start early works and construction immediately following the settlement of the $110 million conditional placement,” stated Frontier’s executive chair, Jamie Cullen.
EPC Contractor Appointment
In addition, Frontier has appointed Monford Group as the EPC contractor for the solar-battery hybrid facility that will be developed in Waroona Stage 1. Monford Group has a track record of successfully delivering various renewable energy projects throughout Western Australia, including the 128MW Cunderdin solar project combined with a 55MW battery energy storage system (BESS), as well as the 260MW Glenellen, 132MW Merredin, and 134MW Yarranlea solar farms.
Monford has already begun detailed design and preparation works and is scheduled to begin mobilisation to the site in September 2026, with both companies aiming to complete the solar-BESS facility by the latter half of 2028. As part of their arrangement, Monford has agreed to relinquish $5 million of the contract value in return for 25 million shares in Frontier.
“Our role as a shareholder aligns our interests with the long-term success of the project and reflects our confidence in Frontier’s vision and growth strategy,” commented Monford’s CEO, Ciaron Shannon.
With control over 830 hectares of freehold land designated for development, Waroona is set to become one of the most significant renewable energy projects in Australia.
