SwitchedOn Podcast: Neighbors Trading Solar Energy
A groundbreaking research initiative is currently evaluating the potential of ‘virtual energy networks’ (VENs) for both residential and commercial use. These networks enable consumers to purchase solar energy directly from their neighbours or sell surplus energy generated from rooftop solar panels to others, even those located in different towns or states, all facilitated through an online platform.
While some councils, educational institutions, and businesses with multiple locations have already adopted VENs—such as sharing solar energy produced at a community centre with nearby offices or depots—most energy retailers have yet to offer this system to individual households.
Research Study Led by Dr Andrea La Nauze
Dr Andrea La Nauze, an Associate Professor of Economics at Deakin University, is spearheading a study aimed at exploring how the implementation of VENs can be broadened. The research team is currently seeking participants for this trial.
If you’re interested in joining the virtual energy network study, you can reach out to the team via email at [email protected] or simply search for “Deakin Virtual Energy Network” online.
