Remote gold mine sources 88 pct of its power needs in last quarter from wind, solar and battery

Bellevue Gold Mine Achieves 88% Renewable Energy in Last Quarter

Bellevue Gold Mine Achieves Remarkable Renewable Energy Milestone

The off-grid Bellevue Gold mine, situated in a secluded area of Western Australia and renowned for possessing some of the highest grade gold reserves in the country, has reported a remarkable average of 87.8 per cent renewable energy usage over the past three months, thanks to its new wind, solar, and battery installations.

According to the ASX-listed Bellevue Gold, this achievement, which involved over 100 days of “engine off” operations—where no fossil fuels were consumed—allows the mine to reach its ambitious goal of attaining net zero for Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, making it the first in the world to accomplish this feat.

Innovative Power Solutions

The mine’s significant progress can be attributed to its state-of-the-art 90-megawatt hybrid power station. This facility includes four wind turbines that generate a collective output of 24 MW, a solar farm with a capacity of 27 MW, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) providing 15 MW/33-megawatt-hours (MWh), alongside 24 MW of thermal generation.

Zenith Energy, a specialist in off-grid power solutions, owns and operates this energy facility, which was completed in mid-July with the installation of the final wind turbine.

Impressive Achievements

The results have been nothing short of exceptional. Prior to the last turbine’s installation, the Bellevue mine had already gained attention for running 100 per cent on renewable energy for 58 hours in June. Subsequently, it marked a milestone in August by achieving 84 consecutive hours without utilising any fossil fuels, a record that was later surpassed in November with 101 consecutive hours of fossil-free power.

These significant efforts were matched by impressive monthly proportions of renewable energy in the gold mine’s electricity supply—78 per cent in July, 88 per cent in August, and peaking at 91 per cent in September. The figures remained high with 88 per cent in both October and November, and 87 per cent in December.

Overall, renewable energy represented 87.8 per cent of the power generated at the mine in the last quarter of 2025, positioning the company to potentially exceed its projected aim of 80-90 per cent renewable energy for the financial year 2026.
